Our Racing Career

Its been my passion for motorcycles and motorcycle racing that got me started with Kickstart Motorcycles in 1976, from the mid 60's through the 70's on to the late 80's I won numerous achievements on my BSA Gold Star, Triumph Bonneville and finally my brace of Bultaco TSS 125's and TSS 250's which gained me the most trophies, through the same period Kickstart Motorcycles supported riders for the IOM TT, Manx GP and various events over the years.

1997 SEASON

In 1996 Piaggio UK announced that in the following year they would be a national scooter racing series and were encouraging franchised dealers like our selves to take part. In 1997 season I had 2 riders which included my son Charles. These Piaggio Zip SP twist 'go' scooters proved to be a nightmare to set up in the early part of the season and if you didn't get it right they would launch you airborne with a power band of only 500rpm. As the 1997 season drew to a close my 2nd rider did not show for the last 2 rounds, as an ex BSB rider he was constantly being beaten by youngsters ½ his aged. 1997 was a big learning curve as how a twist 'n' go can be tuned up and problems incurred which would put me in good steed for my business.

1998 SEASON

The 1998 season saw Kickstart enter a 4 man team in the Gilera Scooter Challenge, Charles Reynolds, Ryan Saxelby, Ben Garner and Rob “99” Jones (ex “Mr Universe” Contender). What a season of highs and lows, fun, mischief and show boating. One instant was at the Brands Hatch Round on the 1st lap on the infamous Paddock Hill bend. Mid pack Rob punctured as entering the corner and collided with Charles both out of control Rob landed up ½ on Charles bike and ½ on his own bike while trying to control his own, Charles eventually continued and Rob D.N.F'd. Last race of the season at Cadwell Park to decided the championship our number 1 rider Ryan Saxelby only had to finish in front of James “wako jako” Jackson for the Championship. In the early stages of the race Charles collided with “wako” and put him out of the race, so with a D.N.F from him all Ryan had to do was to finish to get the championship, unfortunately for us Ryan knew this so started show boating to the crowd pulling wheelies down the goose neck consequently landing up on his arse, wrecking the scooter and landing up 2nd in the championship.

1999 SEASON

1999 Saw kickstart enter the Aprilia 125 superteen challenge with 2 riders Charles Reynolds and Ben Garner. Again another steep learning curve, although the engines are supposed to be standard everybody was fiddling with them and hoping the engines wernt stripped down after the race and disqualified. One incident springs to mind at Brands Hatch., now Charles not being your typical 125 racer, weighing in at 15 stone, to gain an advantage I use to put my skills with that of the BSB scruitineers and fiddle with the engine.....

2000 SEASON

2000 again staying with the Aprilia 125 Superteen challenge with a 2 man team, Charles Reynolds and Cal Crutchlow, but this year also running 2 riders in the Aprilia RS250 challenge, Ian Lougher, who is one of the Isle of Man TT most successful riders, and Lexi King. With Ian's vast experience and racing history we decided Ian to run his bike from his own team of mechanics whilst we were to run Lexi's bike as part of our own team. Again with every season there were highs and lows. Ian was performing to all expectations and more, but due to other commitments with the TT and his Irish road racing scene Ian had to miss a couple of rounds which left him 2nd in the championship, and without doubt would have been the 2000 champion.

2001 SEASON

2001 again was another busy season. We decided to run Charles in the MRO Aprilia RSV challenge on the RSVR we supplied the previous season to Ian Lougher. With a big jump in power from an RS125 to an RSV1000 Charles was coping with the extra 100bhp pretty well, with a spectacular display of wet weather riding at Silverstone to take a win by over half a lap, and to gain extra practice we entered club events at pembrey, even this was at lower club level the rides always proved tough as grid position goes by entry date, and these races were always last minute decision Charles would have to start at the rear end of a 40+ grid but always battle his way through to some very good results very rarely finishing out of the top 3 !. For the second half of the season we decided to swap championships and compete in the British Junior Superstock at BSB rounds on a Suzuki and gained some valuable experience some good results and plenty of fun too.
